We're excited to welcome three bright new interns to the Apex Engineers team this summer - two joining us in Denver and one in Kansas City! Keep reading to learn what drew them to their fields, what they're looking forward to this summer, and a few fun facts about them.
Garrett Hoiness

Garrett graduated from the University of Denver with a bachelor's degree in computer science this month. He will attend graduate school at the University of Colorado Boulder in the fall to pursue a master's degree in network engineering. He will be interning at the Denver office this summer working with the research and development team.
What sparked your interest in joining the research and development team at Apex?
My wife, Kelly Hoiness, has worked for Apex for a year come July. She has kept me abreast of all the R&D team has been doing, and the incredible work they have done despite being self-taught software practitioners. She pitched the idea of me interning for the team to bring some formal software engineering experience to the table, and the rest is history.
What are you most looking forward to about your internship this summer?
I really enjoy solving problems, I suppose that is what makes us all pursue engineering in the first place! I am particularly skilled at finding my way around systems that are already in place, figuring out how everything works, then making informed decisions for improvements/modifications. I am truly excited about getting my bearings in the codebase the team has built, working with them to bring it in line to a professional software engineering standard, and teaching them as much as I can about best practices!
When you're not at Apex, what will you be doing this summer?
I will be doing "computer nerd stuff" such as making improvements on my homelab to work on my Kubernetes and Docker skills, and working my way through a Tensorflow book to increase my GPU related machine learning skills. I will also be doing lots of CAD work and 3D printing, along with continuing work on a robotic arm that myself and a friend are collaborating on for inverse kinematic algorithms. Hopefully no one's eyes glaze over too hard reading all that. Other than that, Kelly and I have big plans to landscape our backyard, and she is going to be using her skills to design a nice pergola for us!
What's your favorite season?
I love fall, it's just the right temperature, I can wear a hoodie on my back porch and watch the birds on our bird feeders!
Dream vacation?
I would love to go to Japan!
Fun fact?
I have my Airframe and Powerplant license, and am qualified to work on any aircraft/helicopter in the US!
Greta Martin

Greta is graduating from the Colorado School of Mines this December with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. She will be interning at the Denver office this summer, working on structural engineering projects.
What sparked your interest in structural engineering?
What sparked my interest in structural engineering was my passion for environmental design and a longstanding interest in architecture. I love how structural engineering blends creativity with technical problem-solving to create sustainable and functional spaces.
What are you most looking forward to about your internship this summer?
This summer, I'm really looking forward to learning from the team at Apex, gaining hands-on experience, and seeing how classroom concepts translate to real-world projects.
When you're not at Apex, what will you be doing this summer?
When I'm not at Apex, I plan to spend as much time outdoors as possible. I'm learning how to fly fish and typically spend summers hiking and backpacking. I tore my ACL while skiing in February, so I'm looking forward to finding new ways to stay active outside.
What's your favorite season?
My favorite season is summer - I love the long days, sunshine, and all the opportunities to be outside.
Dream vacation?
My dream vacation is a ski trip to Japan. I have always been interested in the ancient temples, food, and the great snow there!
Fun fact?
I studied abroad in Cyprus and spent two months teaching engineering concepts in Tanzania.
Lukas Brennan

Lukas is graduating from the University of Kansas this May with his bachelor's degree in architectural engineering. He will begin his master's degree in civil engineering (structural emphasis) at KU in the fall. He will be interning at the Kansas City office this summer, working on structural engineering projects.
What sparked your interest in structural engineering?
Growing up, I was always fascinated by buildings and large cities. I considered studying architecture, but I've always been better at math and science, so I opted to go the engineering route. Once I began at KU, my structures classes were the ones I enjoyed most, so here we are!
What are you most looking forward to about your internship this summer?
I'm excited to get the chance to contribute meaningful work to projects throughout my summer internship. Now that I've wrapped up my degree, I feel better equipped to assist in structural design than I did in my previous internship. Additionally, I am looking forward to the opportunity to do work in the residential sector, as I have yet to work on any projects in this area.
When you're not at Apex, what will you be doing this summer?
My free time this summer will be geared towards improving my golf game. It's one of my favorite hobbies, but I could use some work!
What's your favorite season?
I'd have to say my favorite season is fall. The weather begins to change and holidays are approaching.
Dream vacation?
My family and I are going to Ireland next summer! I am thrilled as this has been a trip I've wanted to take for a long time.
Fun fact?
My freshman year at KU, I had the privilege of witnessing our basketball team win the national championship down in New Orleans.
