Benjamin will graduate from MO S&T this December with a degree in civil engineering. He is considering getting a master's degree.

He is interning at our Kansas City office working on residential projects.

What sparked your interest in structural engineering?

I became interested in civil engineering because my family has a construction background, so I am naturally interested too. I chose structural because I like technical stuff and "structure" to how things get done.

What are you most looking forward to about your internship this summer?

I am looking forward to getting to work on designing houses.

When you're not at Apex, what will you be doing this summer?

When I am not at Apex, I will be climbing at ROKC, completing my summer classes, playing games with friends, or helping my family on projects.

What's your favorite season?

My favorite season is early fall. I like fall because the temperature cools down from a hot summer so most outdoor activities don't feel hot. The trees are also really colorful which looks cool.

Dream vacation?

My dream vacation would be to visit all of the national parks in America.

Fun fact?

The typical person works 80,000 hours throughout their career. (50 weeks/year 40 hours/week * 40 years = 80,000)

Emalie Olson

Emalie will graduate from William Jewell College in May of 2025 with a degree in civil engineering. She is planning on getting her master's online post-graduation.

She is interning at our Kansas City office working on residential projects and in the field.

What sparked your interest in structural engineering?

I grew up with a family-owned residential construction company and always had an interest in the design and development aspects of construction. What made me decide to pursue engineering was helping to problem solve on the new house my parents built my junior year of high school.

What are you most looking forward to about your internship this summer?

I am most looking forward to the chance to grow my knowledge and learn more about what made me choose engineering.

When you're not at Apex, what will you be doing this summer?

When I'm not working, I plan to spend time at the lake or with family/friends.

What's your favorite season?

Summer.

Dream vacation?

I really don't have a 'dream vacation,' I just want to get out and travel to new places as much as possible.

Fun fact?

I have been drawing on house plans since I was about 3 years old.

Logan Cole

Logan graduated from Colorado School of Mines in December 2023 with a degree in civil engineering. He is currently pursuing a master's in civil engineering with a structural engineering emphasis. He is planning on finishing that degree in December.

He is interning at our Denver office working on commercial projects.

What sparked your interest in structural engineering?

I've always been interested in Civil Engineering, even back when I was a kid, but over the past few years I became a lot more interested in how structures work. I became fascinated with the many different components that go into a structure, and this led me to want to be able to help design them. Plus, being able to help design something and then see it actually get built feels very rewarding.

What are you most looking forward to about your internship this summer?

I am most looking forward to being able to help design buildings and getting more hands-on experience in structural engineering.

When you're not at Apex, what will you be doing this summer?

Hopefully hiking more, or in general getting outdoors and seeing more of what Colorado has to offer.

What's your favorite season?

Going to have to say summer here, though fall is a close second.

Dream vacation?

I've always wanted to visit Patagonia in South America.

Fun fact?

I work in the Denver office, but I'm from Kansas City and am a huge KC sports fan.

Spencer Hughes

Spencer will graduate from UMKC in May of 2025 with a degree in civil engineering. He is planning to get his masters or a master's certificate that UMKC offers, while working full time.

He is interning at our Kansas City office working on residential and commercial projects.

What sparked your interest in structural engineering?

My interest in structural engineering sparked when studying failures of structures and understanding what, how, and why catastrophic failures occurred.

What are you most looking forward to about your internship this summer?

I am most looking forward to expanding my knowledge and experience in both residential and commercial work.

When you're not at Apex, what will you be doing this summer?

I would likely be playing volleyball or doing some church activities.

What's your favorite season?

Winter or fall.

Dream vacation?

New Zealand.

Fun fact?

I can juggle.

Wayne Moeck

Wayne graduated from Colorado School of Mines this past May with a degree in civil engineering. He is planning on returning to Mines to complete his master's degree in civil engineering with a structural engineering emphasis. He is planning on finishing that degree in May 2025.

He is interning at our Denver office working on residential projects.

What sparked your interest in structural engineering?

My dad works with civil and structural engineers, so I have always been interested in that part of engineering. I also really enjoyed taking structural engineering classes in college and they interested me in the challenge of designing buildings.

What are you most looking forward to about your internship this summer?

I am most looking forward to gaining a structural engineering experience and learning from other engineers about the profession.

When you're not at Apex, what will you be doing this summer?

Outside of Apex, I plan on being outdoors as much as possible. I plan to go camping and hiking in the mountains and play as much golf as possible. I will also go fishing and go to the beach whenever I travel home to San Diego for vacation.

What's your favorite season?

My favorite season is winter because I love the snow. Being from San Diego I never got to see it snow until I got to college and now, I enjoy it a lot.

Dream vacation?

My dream vacation is to go fishing in Hawaii or Alaska. Hawaii and Alaska are some of the few states I haven't been to and I've always wanted to travel there. I also enjoy fishing and I think it would be interesting to get to fish in those places.

Fun fact?

My fun fact is that I am on the baseball team at Colorado School of Mines, and I play outfield.
